El vestuario especializado: prendas, complementos y accesorios utilizados en un espectáculo para definir y caracterizar a un personaje en su contexto. En el teatro cine o televisión juega un papel importante en la creación de personajes, en la estética visual e incluso en los elementos prácticos en una producción. Aspectos básicos:

  • Indica edad, sexo y cultura del personaje.
  • Estado emocional del personaje.
  • Responde a una época determinada, nacionalidad o pertenencia a una region. Clases,castas.
  • Indica el clima en el lugar en que se desarrolla la escena, así como el paso del tiempo.

Se expresa con imágenes, colores, telas, accesorios, formas y diseños puestos al servicio de una creación escénica o audiovisual.  No solo  se“diseña” sino que es el responsable del gerenciamiento del departamento en su totalidad; investigación, presupuesto, proyecto y producción.

Las fuentes de investigación  que utilizan son diversas según cada caso; pueden ser: periódicos de la época, testimonios sin mediación editorial, retratos, álbumes de familia, revistas de moda, información de internet, etc.Los medios de producción son generalmente mixtos: alquiler de prendas originales, adaptación de prendas existentes y realización de prendas nuevas, categorizadas según la jerarquía de los personajes, así como la relevancia de cada escena, y adaptados estrictamente a la envergadura de la producción del film.
